Lenen — To Give or To Take?

Lenen — To Give or To Take?

In Dutch, the word “lenen” is used for both directions of a transaction. In English, we must distinguish between the giver and the taker.

1. The Core Difference

Direction English Word Dutch Equivalent
Take from someone Borrow Lenen van
Give to someone Lend Lenen aan / Uitlenen
graph LR A[Owner] -- "Lenen van
(Borrow from)" --> B((YOU)) B -- "Uitlenen aan
(Lend to)" --> C[Friend]

The “Ownership” Shortcut:

To pick the right word, ask yourself: “Whose item is it right now?”

Borrow (Lenen van): The item belongs to them. You are taking it.

Lend (Uitlenen aan): The item belongs to you. You are giving it.

2. When to use ‘Borrow’

Use borrow when you are receiving something that you intend to return.

  • Example: “Can I borrow your dictionary?”
  • Dutch: “Mag ik je woordenboek lenen?”

3. When to use ‘Lend’

Use lend when you are giving something to someone else for a short time.

  • Example: “I can lend you my umbrella if it rains.”
  • Dutch: “Ik kan je mijn paraplu lenen (uitlenen).”

4. 🔊 Hear it in Action

How to say “I am lending my umbrella to you” correctly:

🇳🇱 “Ik leen mijn paraplu uit aan je.”

5. ⚠️ Common Mistakes

When speaking English or Dutch, learners often mix the “direction” of the favor.

Common Mistake:

🇳🇱 “Kun je mij jouw auto lenen?” ❌

🇬🇧 “Can you borrow me your car?” ❌

(Direction is confused: You are asking them to give, but using the word for ’take’.)

The Right Way:

🇳🇱 “Wil je jouw auto aan mij uitlenen?” ✅

🇬🇧 “Can you lend me your car?” ✅

(Because you are asking the owner to give it to you.)

Money Example

Common Mistake (Money):

🇬🇧 “I borrowed him 50 Euros.” ❌

(This sounds like you took money from him, when you actually gave it.)

The Right Way:

🇳🇱 “Ik leende 50 euro uit aan hem.” ✅

🇬🇧 “I lent him 50 Euros.” ✅

(Direction: You ➔ Him)

Objects Example

Common Mistake (Objects):

🇳🇱 “Hij leende mijn paraplu voor de regen.” ❌ (Vague direction) 🇬🇧 “He lent my umbrella for the rain.” ❌

(Incorrect because he is the person receiving/taking the item.)

The Right Way:

🇳🇱 “Hij leende mijn paraplu van mij.” ✅

🇬🇧 “He borrowed my umbrella.” ✅

(Direction: Him ➔ You)
